In the US, before a company goes public and has the right to sell shares/stock toinvestors, that company must be audited. In particular, the company’s financials have to beaudited. For example, before Snapchat went public, it was audited by accounting firm Ernst &Young (EY). The firm reviews the company’s financial statements. Next, the company’soperations are reviewed to understand business processes/procedures. The firm then designsaudit procedures to test the company’s financial and to test the company’s documentedprocesses/procedures. The audit procedures might include reviewing incoming/outgoingpayments, reviewing employee evaluations and inspecting company policies. The final result isan opinion provided by the firm. The firm documents its opinion in an audit report where the firmlists procedures performed, identified issues and recommended solutions.
